Summary of Project:
Temporary migration is thought to promote development through the transfer of both financial and social remittances to home countries and communities. Our team of activists, advocates, and academics chose to examine this assertion through our project, The Lives of Migrant Remittances: As Asian Comparative Study (LOMR). Specifically, we: (i) explored how Filipino and Indonesian workers in Hong Kong acquire and disburse their financial and social remittances, (ii) documented the impact of these remittances on migrant workers, their families, their communities, and the national economy by following remittances back to their home communities, (iii) examined the perspectives of public and private stakeholders in Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Indonesia, and iv) worked to inform the current debate regarding migration and development.
